Termidor Termite Control

Termites 101
A single termite might not look that threatening, but an entire colony can do severe structural damage to your home or business. In the Spring, as the temperatures increase, Termites may “Swarm”. Termite swarmers are winged termites whose main role in life is reproducing and creating new termite colonies. In order to find a mate, these future termite kings and queens will swarm and find suitable locations for their colonies. Emerging from tubes built by worker termites, termite swarmers range in color from yellow to black depending on the species. Like many other flying insects, termites are attracted to light and are often seen swarming around exterior lighting or window sills.

Signs of Termite Damage
Evidence of Swarms
When termites swarm out of their nest to mate and find a new colony, they will dispose of their wings, typically near windows, doors, and other access points.
Presence of mud tubes
Because subterranean termites nest underground and make their way up to their food source, they create thin mud tubes as an effective tunnel of transportation. Evidence of these tubes can be found wherever the ground meets your house. These tunnels are highly effective because it blocks out any climate changes, leading termites to your home environment where they can thrive.
Floor Damage
Termites can damage laminate flooring and even skirting boards. Affected flooring may blister and sag in certain areas, making your floor appear as if it has water damage. Checking underneath the flooring may help to uncover termite activity.
Weakened Wood
Termites typically feed on the wood underneath the surface, making them invisible. As they eat through the wood, they create hollow galleries underneath the surface, making the actual structure sound hollow. Hollowed wood usually has a honeycomb interior caused by the termites chewing through the wood in search of cellulose.
Ceiling Damage
Wooden ceilings, beams, architraves, and rafters in attics are just as much at risk of termite damage as wooden structures located nearer ground level. Look for cracks on ceilings and cornices.
Foundation Damage
The type of foundation your property is built on has a significant impact on how easy it may be for termites to gain entry in search of food. Although a lot of foundations nowadays are made of concrete – and termites do not eat concrete – they can squeeze into any crack within these concrete blocks and from there gain access to floor joists, which are still made out of wood. If you are building an extension or any new construction, consider having a termite control professional apply a chemical termite barrier beneath the concrete slab before the concrete is poured. Doing so prevents termites from traveling through foundation cracks. Homes with crawl spaces appear to be at higher risk of damage as their foundations are still traditionally made out of wood.
